What is the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award?
The Award is for all young people aged 14- 25. It gives opportunities for personal achievement, community and social involvement, adventure and widening of interests. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award offers self- belief, self-confidence and independence and that’s just for starters! It also looks good on your CV... The Award is based on a programme of activity adapted to suit individuals – it’s about personal challenge and it’s about choosing things you’re really going to enjoy. To find out more online: www.theaward.org
How does the Award work?
There are three levels – Bronze, Silver and Gold – and four components for each level plus a residential for Gold. For each component, young people choose exactly what to do. The Service part of the Award is about helping people in the local community, for example fundraising or caring for animals. The Skills bit is where you'll need to learn a new skill, anything from learning to drive to designing a website. The Physical Recreation section could be anything from BMX racing to body boarding, from 5-a-side to street dance. The Expedition part needn’t be limited to walking – you can do it by bike or boat or even on horseback!
Who can take part?
Anyone aged 14-25. Access to the Duke of Edinburgh's Award is not based on fitness or ability but just willingness to have a go. The only measure is what young people manage to achieve for themselves.
What does the Award cost?
A Record Book, which you need to complete the Award, costs £11, the costs of the service, skills and physical recreation sections depend on what you do whilst the expedition section costs are kept as low as possible helped by the use of volunteers and loan equipment. No-one will be excluded if this cost is an issue for an individual.
